Screening for Dyslexia

Building Strong Readers Together

At OHMCS, we want every child to grow into a confident and skilled reader. One important way we support this goal is by screening students for characteristics of dyslexia throughout the school year.

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a learning difference that affects how the brain processes language. Students with dyslexia may find it challenging to recognize words, spell, or “sound out” words. These challenges are not connected to intelligence or effort–they simply mean students need specific, explicit instruction to thrive as readers.

Why Screening Matters?

Screening helps us:

  • Support students early–so they don’t have to struggle or feel discouraged.

  • Prevent difficulties from growing–by giving extra help before reading challenges affect confidence and learning in other areas.

  • Promote equity– all students are screened, so every child has the chance to get the right support, no matter their background.

When Does Screening Happen?

  • Grades K-8 all students are screened three times a year (fall, winter, spring)

  • Grades 4-8: If a student’s screening score falls into the some or high-risk category, an additional dyslexia specific screening occurs

In the spring, staff review yearly growth using Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) criteria. If a student shows characteristics of dyslexia, families will be contacted to review results and discuss next steps together.

Family Learning Opportunities

Families are important partners in supporting students. This school year, we hope to host a parent education session to share information about dyslexia and ways to support children at home. Families who cannot attend in person will be able to access the information online. More information will be shared in the near future.

Our Commitment to OHMCS Families

If screenings show that a student may be showing characteristics of dyslexia, families will be contacted. Together, we will talk about the results and possible next steps. Support may include targeted reading instruction, offering family learning opportunities, and partnering with caregivers.

We are here to work together to help every child grow into a confident, successful reader.

Universal Screening

We screen all students in grades K–8 three times a year–in the fall, winter, and spring–to check their math and literacy skills. These screenings give us a snapshot of each student’s strengths and areas where they may need extra support. Combined with daily classroom observations and other informative and formative assessments, this information helps us tailor instruction to meet every student’s learning needs.

The READ Act

The Minnesota Reading to Ensure Academic Development (READ) Act is a state law that helps make sure that every Minnesota child learns to read at or above grade level–starting in Kindergarten and continuing through every grade.
